The project, titled “Integrating conservation & community livelihood through holistic management of BC9”, is being implemented by Trashigang Forest Division, under the Department of Forests and Park Services with support from Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation’s Large Grants Program 2023-24.
This special project at the Biological Corridor – 9 (BC9) aims to achieve:
- Enhanced persistence of wildlife and sustainability of rural livelihoods through implementation of conservation management strategies
- Reduced illegal activities through enhanced SMART patrolling, surveillance and law enforcement
- Increased awareness and engagement of local communities in conservation efforts, fostering a sense of stewardship to their natural heritage
- Establish sustainable livelihood opportunities as an alternative to illegal activities, reducing the reliance on poaching and natural resource exploitation
- Decline in HWC, minimising incidences of crop damage and livestock loss, thereby promoting harmonious co-existence
The BC9 provides an ecological connectivity between Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary and Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, which has similar biodiversity and minimal fragmentation.
