Sonam Tashi serves as Director of the Department of Environment and Climate Change, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Royal Government of Bhutan. With over 25 years of public service, he brings extensive experience from the trade and
industry sectors, complemented by expertise in environmental governance and climate
action.
Mr. Tashi is the current Vice Chair of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Executive Board under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). He co-facilitates negotiations on Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement,
focusing on the development of robust international carbon crediting mechanisms. He also serves as a member of the Climate Action Data Trust, a collaborative initiative by the Government of Singapore, the World Bank, and the International Emissions Trading Association, aimed at enhancing transparency and integrity in global carbon markets.

In addition, Mr. Tashi leads Bhutan’s national climate negotiating team; and represents the Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) climate negotiation bloc under UNFCCC, which was established during COP 30 in Belém, Brazil, in 2025. His leadership
underscores Bhutan’s strong commitment to ambitious climate action, environmental conservation, and sustainable development aligned with Gross National Happiness.
