Nawang heads the Bhutan Ecological Society and serves as Center Director for the Center for Climate and Sustainable Futures, a collaborative research and education venture between the School for Field Studies in the US, the Royal University of Bhutan
and the BES. In collaboration with the Royal Government, Conservation International and the Bhutan Trust Fund, Nawang is advancing efforts to restore Bhutan’s degraded farms and forests. He also champions nature-based solutions and is supporting the conceptualization and implementation of carbon projects. Prior to leading the Bhutan Ecological Society, Nawang headed the erstwhile Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment based out of Lamai Gompa in Bumtang. Nawang also
served as the Park Manager of the Thrumshingla National Park and as Assistant Director of Forests under the Department of Forests and Park Services. Nawang has a PhD (magna cum laude) in Natural Sciences from the International Max-Planck
Research School in Germany and a Masters (with Distinction) in Natural Resources Management from the University of Twente in the Netherlands. For his undergraduate honours degree, Nawang studied forestry at the University of Bangor, Wales in the UK.
