The Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation hosted the Adaptation Fund Project Monitoring Mission on their visit to Bhutan from 31 August to 9 September 2025. The visit aimed to assess the progress, challenges, and effectiveness of ongoing Adaptation Fundโsupported projects.
On 2 September 2025, a monitoring mission meeting was held in Thimphu for the project โAdaptation to Climate-Induced Water Stress through Integrated Landscape Management in Bhutan.โ The mission engaged with key stakeholders, including government agencies, the Implementing Entity (IE), and Executing Entities (EEs). Project updates, achievements, and challenges were shared, followed by discussions on strengthening climate adaptation initiatives.
The mission team also visited the project implementing units and beneficiaries across 13 Gewogs in Tsirang, Dagana, and Paro Dzongkhags on 3, 4, and 6 September 2025. Local governments and community members shared the positive impacts of the projects and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Adaptation Fund team for supporting such initiatives in Bhutan. The project has significantly benefited communities by addressing water shortages, building local capacity, implementing environment and social policy in building resilient communities and enhancing womenโs active participation in project implementation.
In addition, bilateral meetings with the Designated Authority, Department of Environment and Climate Change, Royal Society for Protection of Nature and other relevant agencies were convened during the visit.
The Project Monitoring Mission team comprised of specialists in climate change, communications, knowledge management, and innovation, bringing global expertise to strengthen monitoring, enhance knowledge sharing, and build local capacities across project sites.

The Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation (BTF) serves as Bhutanโs only National Implementing Entity (NIE) to the Adaptation Fund (AF). In 2018, BTF was accredited as the 28th NIE under the Fundโs Direct Access modality- a pioneering mechanism that empowers developing countries to directly access climate finance and design projects aligned with national priorities.
The Adaptation Fundโs grant support to the Royal Government of Bhutan totals USD 16 million, which also includes a large innovation project implemented by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Bhutan.
Adaptation Fundโsupported projects are expected to benefit over 37,000 people across Mongar, Paro, Dagana, Tsirang and Thimphu Dzongkhags, covering 22,250 hectares of land rehabilitation, with at least 60% of women beneficiaries.
