The Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation (BTF) joined the monastic community of Serlung Goenzin Dhuedhey Lungtog Choeling, Dawakha, Paro, on 11 September 2026 for the inauguration of a 3,000 LPD (3000 liters per day) Pressurized hybrid Solar Water Heating Facility, marking the successful completion of the “Solar Wellness for Monks” project supported through BTF’s Large Grant Window.
Presided over by Khenpo Tashi Dorji, the inauguration marked an important step towards enhancing the hygiene, health and overall wellbeing of more than 300 resident monks through reliable access to hot water.
Supported by a BTF grant of Nu. 5.363 million, the facility is equipped with 360 pcs of Evacuated solar collectors (12 manifolds consisting of 30 tubes in each manifold) and a 3,000 LPD (3000 liters per day) hot-water storage capacity. By shifting from conventional firewood-based heating to solar energy, the facility is expected to save approximately Nu. 500,000 annually in firewood costs for water heating purpose and reduce firewood consumption by around 27 truckloads each year.
Beyond financial savings, the initiative will contribute to forest conservation, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved hygiene and a reduction in the incidence of skin-related health issues among the monks.
The project exemplifies BTF’s commitment to advancing environmental conservation, renewable energy and social wellbeing, demonstrating how clean and innovative solutions can strengthen Bhutan’s cultural institutions while contributing to a greener, healthier and more sustainable Bhutan.
