Funding Windows of the Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation
The Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation (BTF) supports environmental conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development in Bhutan through four dedicated funding windows:
- Large Grants Window
- Small Grants Window
- Advocacy Grants Window
- Program-Related Investments (PRI) Window
These funding windows are designed to support a wide range of stakeholders from communities and civil society to government agencies and private sector actors at different scales and with different financing approaches.
All projects financed through BTF’s endowment resources must comply with the Fund’s Environmental, Social, Gender, and other relevant safeguards. Proposals are expected to demonstrate responsible environmental management, social inclusion, and gender responsiveness.
To ensure transparency and accountability:
- All funded projects are monitored by the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Unit of the BTF Secretariat
- Projects are subject to audit by the Internal Audit Unit or external auditors
- Periodic reporting and compliance reviews are mandatory for all funding windows
Advocacy Grants Window
The Advocacy Grants Window is established to promote environmental awareness, strengthen public engagement, and enhance the visibility of conservation efforts supported by the BTF Secretariat.
Under this funding window, up to 10% of the BTF Secretariat’s annual budget may be allocated to support advocacy, outreach, communication, education, and awareness initiatives that contribute to environmental conservation and sustainability in Bhutan.
The Advocacy Grants Window supports initiatives that help raise public understanding of environmental issues, showcase conservation success stories, and promote wider participation in environmental stewardship.
The Advocacy Grants Window is open to eligible Bhutanese: Government agencies, CSOs, educational institutions, media, youth groups, CBOs, and individuals.
Proposed activities should demonstrate relevance to environmental conservation, awareness creation, outreach, education, or promotion of BTF-supported initiatives.
Step 1: Proposal Submission
Applicants submit the completed proposal along with the required supporting documents.
Step 3: Selection and Notification
Selected applicants are informed of the review outcome and may proceed with implementation upon approval.
The BTF Secretariat encourages creative and impactful advocacy initiatives that promote environmental awareness, inspire community participation, and strengthen conservation efforts in Bhutan.
